Specialty Contact Lenses

In the past, many patients were advised against wearing contact lenses due to the shape, size, or condition of their eyes. However, this is no longer the case. Today, many individuals are able to wear what are known as “specialty contact lenses.” Glen Abbey Vision Centre offers a wide range of these lenses to accommodate various prescriptions and eye conditions.

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral contact lenses are a great solution for patients dealing with conditions like keratoconus, moderate to severe dry eye, post-corneal transplant, and other issues that make wearing traditional contact lenses difficult. Scleral lenses can relieve dry eyes by creating a fluid reservoir that helps keep the cornea moist and protected from exposure. Unlike most contact lenses that only cover the cornea, scleral lenses extend over the cornea and part of the sclera (the white part of the eye). This additional coverage helps improve the stability and comfort of the lens for the wearer.

Ortho-K Contact Lenses

Ortho-K contact lenses are a type of rigid lens worn overnight to control myopia. While the wearer sleeps, the lens gently reshapes the cornea, temporarily correcting refractive errors. This allows users to enjoy clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or other corrective devices, offering a non-surgical alternative.

Toric Contact Lenses

Toric soft contact lenses are designed to correct astigmatism. Unlike spherical lenses, they provide varying levels of correction along different axes. To ensure proper function, toric lenses have a special design feature that helps them stay aligned with the eye.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Multifocal soft contact lenses provide different levels of correction within one lens and are used to treat presbyopia, a condition that makes reading difficult for those over 45. These lenses offer a balanced solution for clear vision at various distances, including distance, intermediate, and near vision.

Hard (RGP) Contact Lenses

People wear rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses for clearer vision, especially those with conditions like keratoconus or astigmatism. RGP lenses provide a smoother surface over the cornea, improving vision sharpness. They’re more durable than soft lenses, allow better oxygen flow to the eye, and can be custom-fit for unique eye shapes. While they may require an adjustment period, they offer long-lasting comfort and are a cost-effective solution over time.

Hybrid Contact Lenses

Hybrid contact lenses combine the benefits of both soft and rigid lenses, with a rigid center for improved vision and a soft outer ring for added comfort. This design offers the clear vision of rigid lenses along with the comfort of soft lenses. At Glen Abbey Vision Centre, we are pleased to offer hybrid lenses from Synergeyes.
